Shared Governance Councils

Midland Memorial Hospital facilitates and supports a culture of shared governance by providing a voice for every member of the Operations division. Shared governance encourages and promotes employee empowerment for professional practice by giving authority and responsibility at the department level (unit-based councils) as well as interdisciplinary groups (councils). This accountability results in responsible decision making, and successful conflict resolution.

Midland Memorial Hospital believes that professional shared accountability will result in excellence in practice and an environment conducive to initiative, creativity and support for professional development. The following councils have been established to facilitate change throughout the organization.

Exemplary Professional Practice Council

The Professional Practice Council’s purpose is to have a comprehensive understanding of the role of patient care team members; the application of these roles with patients, families, our community and the interdisciplinary team; the application of new knowledge and evidence. More than the establishment of strong professional practice, it is what exemplary professional practice can achieve.

Transformational Leadership Council

The Transformational Leadership Council transforms patient care services to meet the future and establishes a controlled destabilization that births new ideas and innovations.

Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic planning
Advocacy and influence
Visibility, accessibility and communication
Succession planning

Nurse Staffing Advisory Council

The Nurse Staffing Advisory Council addresses staffing needs of the organization grounded in ethical practice and facilitates professional practice and accountability.

Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
Reviewing and improving the written nurse staffing plan
Considering critical staffing factors in determining staffing levels
Considering nursing sensitive outcomes in evaluating the adequacy of staffing
Facilitating timely and effective identification of concerns about the adequacy of staffing
Assurance of fatigue management plan in place and monitored
Assures self-scheduling policy is in place, monitors and evaluates
Explores staffing technology to increase the effectiveness of staff

New Knowledge, Innovations and Improvements Council

The Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council reviews new models of care, application of existing evidence, new evidence and visible contributions to the science of nursing and allied health.

Structural Empowerment Council

The Structural Empowerment Council creates an innovative and flexible environment where strong professional practice flourishes and where the mission, vision and values come to life to achieve the outcomes believed to be important to Midland Memorial Hospital. The council develops, directs and empowers staff to find the best way to accomplish Midland Memorial Hospital’s goals and achieve outcomes through a multi-directional decision-making process.
