Hospitals Experiencing Shortage of IV Fluids Nationwide

Posted On: 11/14/2017

Midland Memorial Hospital, Odessa Regional Medical Center, and Medical Center Hospital are currently experiencing a shortage of IV fluids.

One of the major IV fluid suppliers, Baxter, has three manufacturing sites that have been devastated by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and shut down. Other suppliers like B. Braun Medical and Pfizer are now experiencing the same shortage due to manufacturing interruptions and demand increase. This shortage is affecting hospitals nationwide, not just here in Midland/Odessa.

Currently, all three local hospitals have fluids available, but levels are low. It is unknown when the shortage will be resolved, but steps are being taken to limit any potential patient impact. Inventory is available as needed for trauma and emergency cases.
