Not sleeping enough and not sleeping well is not OK. It may surprise you to learn that chronic sleep deprivation, for whatever reason, significantly affects your health, performance, safety, and pocketbook.
There are many causes of sleep deprivation which may intrude upon your ability to sleep well. Perhaps you're one of the millions of Americans who trade sleep for more work or play. Whatever the reason, it is critically important to realize that sleep deprivation is often due to unrecognized sleep disorders.
After a typical night's sleep, you may not feel restored and refreshed. You might think, "It's just the stress of work or the kids," or you might have "always felt this way," and had no idea you should feel differently. This lack of awareness compounds the consequences, because so many people remain undiagnosed for years.
Accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine
The Midland Memorial Hospital Diagnostic Sleep Center received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in October 2022. To receive and maintain accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center's goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers, the AASM improves sleep health and promotes high quality, patient-centered care through advocacy, education, strategic research, and practice standards.
