The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force just released a new recommendation for annual lung cancer screenings using low-dose computed tomography (CT). Their recommendation specifically identifies those aged 55-80 years old who have smoked the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes daily for 30 years.
“By screening those at high risk, we can find lung cancer at earlier stages when it is more likely to be treatable,” said Task Force Chair Virginia Moyer, M.D., cautioning that screening “is not an alternative to quitting smoking.”
Midland Memorial Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Associates (DIA) offers the recommended, low-dose CT screenings and is open on weekends to better accommodate schedules. The screening is offered at a reduced fee of $300.00.
In response to this Task Force recommendation, DIA at Midland Memorial will also offer this life-saving screening at no charge on four (4) Saturdays in September from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Spots are limited and patients must meet the criteria listed below and have an order from a medical provider.
· Between the ages of 55 years and 80-years-old
· Current smoker or former smoker who quit smoking less than 15 years ago
· Smoked for at least 30 pack year (to calculate: ______ packs per day x _______years smoked = _______pack years)
