Midland Memorial Welcomes the NICHE Program

Posted On: 8/21/2014

We have officially introduced the NICHE (Nurses Improving Care of Healthsystem Elders) program to enhance the care and services for older patients throughout the hospital. An Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) unit is also officially open as part of the NICHE program. Nearly 40 percent of the patients admitted to Midland Memorial are 65 or older-a figure that's expected to increase. This is a nurse-driven program designed to help hospitals across North America improve the care of older adults.

Guided by the NICHE program, MMH now assesses operations, policies, procedures and training and makes any necessary changes to ensure elderly patients are treated with exemplary expertise and sensitivity.

"We're always on a path to continuous improvement," says Bob Dent, DNP, RN, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. "We are the first hospital within 250 miles to be designated as a NICHE organization."

Lori Wingate, DNP, RN, is the MMH program leader and care coordinator. To learn more, visit nicheprogram.org.
