Certified Nurses Day honors nurses worldwide who contribute to better patient outcomes through national board certification in their specialty. Inspired by Margretta Madden Styles, a pioneer in nursing certification, Certified Nurses Day is the perfect opportunity to invite all nurses to advance their career by choosing certification.

Midland Memorial Hospital is a two-time American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Pathway to Excellence designated hospital. The Pathway to Excellence Program recognizes health care organizations for positive environments where nurses excel. To qualify, organizations meet 12 practice standards essential to an ideal nursing practice environment. Nurses trust that pathway-designated organizations respect their contributions, support professional development and nurture optimal work settings.

Board certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general, has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as the nurse’s strong personal commitment to excellence.

Many nursing certification bodies exist to serve the full range of specialized nursing care offered in the contemporary healthcare system, national nurse-certifying bodies should be accredited by either the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification or the National Organization for Competence Assurance, or both.

Nurses have been voted the most honest and ethical profession for the past 13 years according to a Gallup poll. The annual survey gauges public trust in professions, and 80 percent of Americans rates nurses’ honesty and ethical standards as very high or high.
