Midland Health Relaunches Weigh To Success
Obesity across America continues to be a public health crisis. Approximately 40.3% of U.S. adults are classified as obese as of recent CDC data. Midland Health's vision is to make Midland the healthiest community in Texas. Midland Health’s efforts to achieve this vision are by focusing on preventative care, holistic health, and addressing chronic diseases.
In 2026, Midland Health is relaunching a new Weigh to Success. The new Weigh to Success is a multidisciplinary weight management program designed to help patients to improve their overall health and to treat or reverse chronic issues such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea. The Weigh to Success program brings together Lifestyle Medicine, medical management of obesity, as well as surgical options. A personalized plan for improving health will be guided by our team of highly experienced medical providers to help patients achieve their goals for improved health.
A Foundation in Lifestyle Medicine
At the heart of the program is Lifestyle Medicine, which emphasizes whole-food, plant-based nutrition. Dr. Gadiraju is certified in lifestyle medicine to help patients learn how proper nutrition is utilized to treat and often reverse chronic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Unlike restrictive "fad" diets, this approach focuses on nutrient-dense, high-fiber plant foods that naturally help to feel full faster and reduce calories. Patients are guided on how to transition toward a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains to improve overall health.
Exercise and Mental Well-being
Weight management is as much about the mind as it is the body. The program includes on-staff psychologists who use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help patients identify emotional triggers for eating and develop healthier coping strategies. This psychological support is critical for breaking the cycles of stress-eating and building the confidence needed for permanent change.
Exercise is another key part of a healthy lifestyle. By focusing on building muscle mass and improving cardiovascular health, exercise supports the metabolic shifts necessary for long-term weight maintenance. Exercise is important for physical and mental well-being, helping manage weight, reducing risks of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers, while improving mood, sleep, energy levels, bone health, and cognitive function, ultimately leading to a longer, healthier life.
Modern Medication and Surgical Support
For many, biology and hormones can present significant barriers to weight loss. Weigh to Success integrates medication management to help regulate appetite and metabolism. Sundae Adkins, Nurse Practitioner, coordinates the patient’s care for medical management of obesity which uses foundational lifestyle changes of diet, exercise, and behavior with weight-loss medications all aimed at improving health and achieving sustainable weight loss.
For patients requiring more intensive intervention, the program provides a pathway to bariatric surgery. Surgical options are paired with lifelong medical follow-up to ensure patients maintain their results safely. Our highly skilled bariatric surgeons, Dr. Van Husen, and Dr. Bassett will advise the patient which surgical option would be best suited for ideal patient outcomes.
A Community of Success
Weigh to Success features support groups and ongoing education that provide a sense of community and accountability. These groups allow participants to share experiences, overcome challenges together, and celebrate milestones in a supportive environment.
